The mother of Handler worked as a housekeeper, while her father worked as a used-car dealer. Her mother came to America in the year 1958 after emigrating from Germany. Breast cancer was discovered in 1989. Her death came a decade following her battle with cancer. Handler was brought up in Reform Judaism by her father who was Jewish. Handler had a pleasant good, healthy and safe childhood living in a safe neighborhood. Her move from the city of her birth to Los Angeles when she was 19, to pursue acting. Handler was forced to become an actress in order to live. Handler decided to concentrate on stand-up at the age of 21 after she realized the power of storytelling. At the beginning of her career Handler started out her profession as part of the Oxygen network's all-female cast of a hidden camera/practical joke reality TV series Girls Behaving Badly. From 2002 to 2005, the series aired. The handler started appearing on different shows such including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler was a part of The Tonight Show for a time as a reporter. Handler made her breakthrough in 2006, when she began hosting her own show on E! The Chelsea Handler Program. The show ran for two seasons. Handler continued her stand-up career by appearing in the Comedy Central Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour which was a tour which was a tour in the United States.
